Car Travel tray
Do you have any hints/tips for minimal stress moving my cats from Bristol to London?

It'll be about a three hour drive (unless there's traffic), I don't really want them to use the litter tray, as we don't plan to stop en route... I heard that you don't feed them for 12 hours before traveling, and no water for six, is that correct?
Is there any way I can get a mild sedative from the vet so they sleep the whole way, ie no toilet issues.....
They're 1 year old housecats, incredibly well behaved, although one of them hates going in cars even for 10 minutes, so I want to make this as stress-free as possible for her; hence another reason for finding out about sedatives.....
Any hints/tips or personal experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Take up the food and water about 3 hrs before you leave. That will be enough to help minimize or avoid any stomach problems. 12 hours plus the travel time is too long for them to go without food or water.

Cats can go 3 hours without the litter box so don't worry about that. Mine typically uses it between 6-7am so when we travel I plan to leave around 8 just to make sure she's had a chance to go!

If you have time, you can start preparing them for the ride. Leave their carriers out on the floor with a shirt you've worn in it. They'll get used them being there and probably mark it with their scent. My cat takes naps in hers. Next I started putting her in the carrier, taking her out to the car for a minute and bringing her back in the house. She got used to the in and out routine and it didn't bother her. Then I started up the car and just sat in the driveway. Once the cat was comfortable with that we started taking short trips. After that it was easy to take a longer one.

You could also spray the carriers with Feliway or Rescue Remedy. The pheromones can help calm the cats.

I take my cat on vacation in the summer, it's a 3hr ride and she's a good traveler. We're now getting ready to head to the midwest to visit my in-laws. That's a 10hr ride. Fortunately, the cat just curls up and sleeps.

The link below has some good tips to help you prepare for the trip.
