Garage door safety and detectors?

I replaced the safety sensors and the garage has worked for one day after he left to work again. I bought new sensors online, but nobody knows how many times the sensors are defective or damaged in transit? I guess they are to develop electricity. How does the sensor transmits information to the boot? I ask because I could not connect the sensors with new cables if the cables are bad, but I do not understand how they work.
