1997 Dodge Ram 1500. How do I ID an engine? Original VIN told equipped w / 318, but the radiator support that he has 360?

I viewed on the left side of the engine block. I found a series of digits (8 digits followed by hyphen and 4 digits). I am more familiar with Chevrolet. I work on trucks in the armed forces. Who just want to know if do not buy parts for the engine trouble. Or are the majority, if not 318/360 all parts interchangeable? This is a typical Magnum V8 installed on these trucks.
