Advice on buying a muscle car?
I'm looking into buying a muscle car, but I would like to use it as a daily driver.
I really don't want to have an original car, because I wouldn't want to ruin a true classic, because I will want to have AC and a CD player in it, so I have been advised to look into Clone cars.
Any advice or websites you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.
Thus far I am looking for Pontiac GTO's and Chevy Chevelle's. My dream car would be a Cuda, but I think those are to pricey.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
The first, and biggest question to answer is: How much are you looking to spend?
If you like the body lines of a Chevelle (and who doesn't?), but can't afford or can't find something that's good-looking and not half way across the country, how about a Mopar A-body? The Duster/Dart/Demon are all good, lightweight cars that can be pretty easily modified and fit anything from a 198ci /6 to a 440 six-pack. They're also, with the exception of the Demon, fairly easy to find and still pretty cheap. The earlier suggestion of a Nova is a good one too, though I think you'd have to look pre-1976 for a two-door that's anything resembling sexy.
If your heart is set on a GTO, aside from just saying "Good Luck," I might recommend finding a Le Mans and making it a GTO clone. I found one around where I live that went for $6000, running and in primer with a monster engine that supposedly ran 7s in the quarter. What I didn't know, however, was that it was actually a Le Mans that the guy had started to clone into a GTO, but failed to tell me that when I bought it. Had to run the VIN to find out.... I was pretty pissed.
Anyway, moral of the story, if you look around and don't jump at the first thing you find, there are some great deals to be had out there. CarDomain.com was a good suggestion, and I'd also recommend searching for message boards dedicated to specific cars (I'm on ForABodiesOnly.com, dedicated to pre-'72 Mopar A-bodies), and finding the Auto & RV magazine for your state. They always have a *huge* Hot Rods, Collectibles, & Racing section, plus a $4000 & Under section that always has a handful of muscle and older cars in it.
I guess I'll stop yapping at you now, and good luck on your search!!
