When My Car is in Drive, the Brakes won't fully Release?
After I start my '66 Thunderbird and release the Emergency brake I put the car in Drive and have to give it some gas to move. About a mile later, the brakes relax and it runs fine. When I stop and re-start the car, the brakes once again slightly remain engaged until I give it some gas and start rolling. Never at a signal, just after starting....What is Causing this ?? Wheel cylinder, Master cylinder or brake hardware??? Front is Disc, Rear are Drums...Help !!!
Emergency brakes only work with the drum brakes, in other words, the rear wheels. This happens because emergency brakes work manually via a cable which stretches from your emergency brake pedal to the rear. At about where your muffler is, the cable splits in two creating a Y which is directed to your right and left rear wheels. If you do not have the problem with your regular brakes activated by the wheel cylinders, your problem is probably in the mechanical (cable) portion of the emergency brake.
First do not engage the emergency brake, and check what happens. Second, if everything is cool, check the function of your emergency brake pedal, which needs to "release fully", otherwise it creates drag on the rear wheels. Third, verify the tension on the cable underneath your car, which ought to be tense when engaged, and loose when disengaged. Right about where the driver's sit is, the cable should have a tension adjustment, which usually becomes rusty due to exposure to wet conditions.
If drum surfaces are not smooth, brake shoes usually tend to stick to the drums when they are in poor condition. However, that would apply for both pedal and emergency brakes which does not seem to be the case.
